Granneman introduced the PB&J pizza to please customers looking for dessert on the East of Chicago menu. There's a special technique involved in making the pizza come out piping hot with bubbling, luscious jelly. The peanut butter has to be microwaved until pourable, and the jelly must be spread from edge to edge to keep the peanut butter from burning.
If anyone apart from me is a tragic enough individual to want to read a History of Pizza then I suggest you try http://www.averanapoli.it/ingstoria.htm. I agree that most commercially marketed pizzas are American and that American pizza is very different from Italian pizza. In fact, there's about as much similarity as there is between our national dish, Chicken Tikka Masala (brummie through and through) and authentic Indian food

I don't think you're tragic White Hart! I learned that fun fact about barbecue sauce starting as a meat tenderizer from a History Channel program about American food. And yes, I did watch the whole thing, and even more sadly, I think I may have watched it on a weekend night.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with this, but I prefer Italian pizza. This is a perpetual argument between me and one of my friends, centreing on Pizza Hut v Pizza Express
