Rest in Peace
George Best 1946-2005
The brightest star in the footballing world has gone out, the man was a true genius with a football, ok so off the pitch he had his problems and they were well documented but lets remember him for what he was, one of the greatest players the world will ever see.

I lost all respect for the man when he continued to drink himself into the grave following a sodding liver transplant. That organ could have saved the life of someone who'd have respected the gift of a second chance.
Selfish ****.

You're right, it is a waste of the donor organ, but that he continued to drink when he knew it was almost certain to kill him suggests to me he was unable to overcome a compulsive disease rather than acting selfishly, and I don't feel able to condemn someone for that.
Firstly, I didn't say "condemn" and secondly I agree that alcoholism is a disease but in this case it is very possible that his disease didn't cost only his life, but possibly that of an alternative organ recipient as well.

Had he taken that life behind the wheel of a car whilst under the influence of his compulsive drinking, I doubt the luxury of "it's not really his fault" would be afforded to him.
In a world where so many people die each year because of the unavailability of donor organs, the thought that this man pissed away a second chance at life baffles me. The fact that a man so blatantly uninterested in rehabilitation was even given the liver in the first place is quite frankly unconscionable.
I kind of agree with this.

I really don't see why there is so much news on this subject. Yes he played football, and did it well but I really don't get why this is a top story. I completely agree with what Yvonne said about the organ, I think it is terrible they wasted a liver on him.

My sentiments exactly. Plus he was only a footballer. Mother Teresa didn't get this much coverage when she passed away...

He defined a decade for a lot of people in this country. His extracurricular activities had just as much impact as his playing days.
Didn't really define a lot for me, except for alcoholism sucks.

Considering you weren't alive at the time it's hardly surprising. However it's plain to see that many people held him alongside the Beatles, Woodstock et al as defining icons of the 60s just from reading some of the many tributes.
Actually a lot of people who aren't in my generation and I wasn't alive when they were around have defined me.
