But I just had to say... GO ENGLAND!! 1-0!! Woo-hoo!!
World Cup 2006
Well I never thought I'd be the one to start a football thread...
But I just had to say... GO ENGLAND!! 1-0!! Woo-hoo!!
Oh, and I absolutely love Peter Crouch! He's so skinny and gangly and he looks so awkward and uncoordinated, as if he's gonna fall over at any moment, and yet he's one of our star strikers! And from a distance he really reminds me of Eugene from Big Brother 6! He's so cool, I wish I'd got his name and number on my England shirt...
Come and have a go Trinidad and Tobego, if you think you're hard enough...

Nah, that was going in anyway.
We got our 3 points, so hooray for that. Otherwise it was woeful.
Not the first half, England dominated, had consistent possession and couple of good chances. But the second was back to normal as Sven slips back into Italian footie mode and shreds the nation's nerves defending a 1-0 lead. Which works so well for England in major tournaments. Another "mental substitution" (ta Mr Wright) taking off Owen after a few minutes, leaving poor old Crouch stranded like a giraffe amidst a pack of jackals. We were only saved by Paraguay's own failings, and then only just. A 1-1 draw was what we deserved; thank friar tuck we didn't get it.
If Sven keeps playing England like this we're on the bus the first decent team we meet.

watched the german match yesterday and at least that 6 goals, england got an early start but then seemed to lose the point in the second half.
But at least it looked great in HD

England looked so good in the first half. Beckham positivly danced on the ball, and Peter Crouch... was just hugely entertaining I've never seen someone so Lanky, move so well.
And then.. what happened? I know the Ref was going doolally by giving everything that could be deemed a foul to Paraguay and getting in a huff everytime the England team went to get a drink. But still.. until the last five minute we were terrible, but we did pick up a little in the end.
Lets hope we make up for our mistakes in the next match... I think we'll beat Trinidad and Tobago, but Sweden could give us a run for our money if we don't buck our ideas up

That ref was a cheating C-word.
And that number 13 did nothing but beat the crap out of our players!
I cant believe Gerrard got a yellow card when he didnt even touch the bloke.
And Joe Cole played a blinder today.
I watched in my england top, with my england flag, my little whistle and my little red and yellow cards so that i coudl play along.
Altho it didnt work when i tried to give the ref a red card....
We were utter shite in the second half, it just proves how good our defenders are that the other team didnt score!
Roll on the next game!

Anyone else catch the Sweden vs. Trinidad and Tobago match? The lads from the Caribbean put in a heroic performance, holding on to a nil-nil draw throughout a 10-man second half. The Swedes pressed home the attack with a tight if uninspired passing game, but Trinidad's fluid defending and the string of saves by last-minute substitute-goalie Shaka Hislop defeated them. Trinidad even got in a couple of break-away attacks between battling the wannabe-pillaging hoards.
Best match of the cup to date. (Though the Argentina-Ivory Coast game came close.) Defying the patronising media, Trinidad's pride and determination was an example to all. England will surely take note: Thursday's easy ride has been cancelled.

Yay to England wining, but IMO the match itself was a bit boring except for the first 10 minutes and the last.
Watched the England game and thought it was alright. Referee was awful and I was just waiting for him to do something ludicrous like send someone off for drinking water
Engalnd were immense in the first 30 minutes then went off the boil. Serious questions have to be asked of there fitness, something that was supposedly rectified following the last World Cup. Watching them against Paraguay the team in the first 30 minutes had a real chance of winning the tournament but they just don't seem to have the stamina. Watch them steamroller there group and then get beaten in the 2nd round by either Ecuador or Germany.

Watched the England game in a pub in Dublin (an experience!). Didn't think the match was fantastic and thought they were pretty dire to be honest. I think I fancy Crouch
I think that performance was very encouraging. We dominated in the periods when we were actually (against what was a decent side). The only worry was the defensive display in the second half, which hopefully was just down to the heat and not tactics.
I'm looking forward to the game on Thursday. There' a barbeque at work with free food and alcohol Hopefully we can take more of our chances in the first half and then give Rooney a run out for half an hour so that he can gain a bit of match fitness.

Disappointing Brazil v Croatia game last night. Brazil coasted through most of the first half, and, after the unfortunately named Kaka finally belted one in at a distance, coasted through the second. Croatia set up lots of good chances but could never make them work.
But far, far more important than all that: looks like Ronaldo's been at the pies!
