They put on a bbq after work for us to watch it on the big screen in the conference room. I got very drunk , although fortunately I didn't have too far to stagger home afterwards

Well the Italy/USA game was interesting...

What was interesting about it? I didn't see it--not that I would have known what was going on anyway. I mean, you know, the finer points of the game. How players set up. Strategy. All the stuff that makes it interesting.

I hear we played to a tie with Italy? Which, considering the major suckage that is the US team, I guess is a good thing?

We heathen "soccer" nations call it a draw.

But yep, surprisingly good show by the US. I lost count as goals were disallowed all over the shop (type "offside rule" into wikipedia if you're feeling brave ), but they came close to winning it.

One black-mark was the disgusting fouling by both teams. (Italy began with the worst elbow to face move I've seen.) The US followed with a tackle so vicious it should have seen the player thrown out the cup let alone the match. It's been a relatively clean competition so far -- even the Argies wowed with their passing not their nobbling -- and it was a sad let-down in an otherwise good match.

The sheer quantity of fouling in the Italy v USA game pips it for me though. (There were at least two other red-card incidents the ref missed.) Mostly, it has to be said, from the Americans. Come on chaps; aggression is good, but it's not that sort of football!

I say if the US team can't play nicely, they just shouldn't play--which they won't be soon anyway because I'm guessing they'll be eliminated after losing the next game. (I'm SO supportive.) At least they're not embarrassing themselves in front of a large North American audience, since I don't think many people are watching.

Always up for a challenge, I typed "offside rule" into Wikipedia, Byron. Good god! I think I need illustrative stick figures! Actually, it's kind of understandable, but I'd have to look at a few games to see how it works in practice. Point taken about "draw" and "tie." You guys also say "The US lost one-nil" instead of "one-nothing" which is how we'd say it here. It's funny, but people here never use the word nil--in any context. But during this World Cup, the sports announcers have been using it to report the World Cup scores--and ONLY to report the World Cup scores.

Just one more thing. (Yes, there's always one more thing.) Speaking of unsportsmanlike behavior of the US and Italian teams. I think one of the most unsportsmanlike incidents I can recall was during a baseball game. Well, aside from the beanings, spitballs, taking a bat to the water cooler, throwing Gatorade on the field, and bench-clering brawls. But anyway, a player got called out on a close play and didn't think he was really out. He argued with the umpire, and of course didn't win the argument. So he went over to first base and ripped it out of the ground. Just ripped it out and carried it off the field. And they can't play without it, so they're telling him to put it back. And he's there holding it and refusing to give it back. Well, he finally did--or maybe they got a spare one from somewhere. I don't remember. Yeah, it was unsportsmanlike, but it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

That's hilarious! I remember a couple of years ago there was an athlete (John Drummond was it?) who was disqualified from the 100m heats in the World Championships, so he just lay on the track for about half an hour so that the race couldn't go ahead!

The offside rule is way more complicated than it needs to be. Just when people think they have it figured the powers that be tinker with it a bit, just to confuse everyone.

so how do you get on with the tennis then??
gotta love a sport where the scoring starts at "love" - then goes on with "15", "30", and finally "40" (huh?? what happened to 45??)
and no matter how hard you try, you never get past 40...

but yeah - i suppose its like when some of the channels over here show rugby-for-softies (what you know as "football" and the rest of the world knows as "rugby with pads", and the audience just sits there staring while these blokes sit there talking a totally different language.

I totally understand the offside rule. This is how I had it explained to me:

You're in a handbag shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop assistant on the till is a limited edition handbag which you have seen and which you must have.

The female shopper in front of you has seen it also and is eyeing it with desire. Both of you have forgotten your purses.

It would be rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the bag.

The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.

Your friend is looking at another bag at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma.

She prepares to throw her purse to you.

If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the handbag.

At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and "whilst it is in flight" you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the bag.

BUT, you must always remember that until the purse has "actually been thrown", it would be plain wrong for you to be in front of the other shopper and you would be OFFSIDE!
