The poor Portuguese could be without four of their players for the England game. Awwww.
World Cup 2006
Well I never thought I'd be the one to start a football thread...
But I just had to say... GO ENGLAND!! 1-0!! Woo-hoo!!
Oh, and I absolutely love Peter Crouch! He's so skinny and gangly and he looks so awkward and uncoordinated, as if he's gonna fall over at any moment, and yet he's one of our star strikers! And from a distance he really reminds me of Eugene from Big Brother 6! He's so cool, I wish I'd got his name and number on my England shirt...
Come and have a go Trinidad and Tobego, if you think you're hard enough...

Heh yeah, I'm pretty happy about that obviously but I do think i've just seen the worst football match in my life. Horrible, horrible ... *shakes head*

I hope that the Fifa bigwigs who drew up these draconian refereeing guidelines are pleased with themselves. Four players off, with three off in two other games

didnt see the holland/portugal game, but heard about it while sat backstage chilling with the band...
all i know is - if the fans were to act like that, all matches would be held behind closed doors.
and i still say that there should have been less england bookings, and more ecudoreans booked - the seemed to enjoy using their hands too much, and werent averse to going in studds first for high tackles (not to mention diving if anyone got within 10 feet of them!!)

Holland + Portugal = nice bit of biffy.
To be fair to the ref, who was pretty awful, the players have an equal share of the blame. Creative fouling reaches new heights. (The judo-flip and sneaky headbutt are classics.) Not football as we know it Jim, but it was damn good entertainment.
As for England: good job lads! As one of the naysayers (to paraphrase Yes Minister: "Naysayer: what an idealist calls a realist" ) I'll say nothing would make me happier than to be proved wrong. My criticism's been directed at the manager; as England showed for most of the second-half, when the tactics are right they can play damn fine football.
But we'll have to win it before I forgive Sven for leaving us with two playable strikers.

Yeah I thought that. I did wonder if that was the Ecuador Rugby team for a while...

Yeah, that was a harsh decision... If I was an Aussie I'd be gutted right now.
I thought that was so nice, first our players were hugging and chatting to the other players and then they had that racism speech.
Good show old chaps

Come on Brazil!
I dont want the french, the italians, the germans or portugal to win.
So come on brazil!!!

And out go Brazil ...
Much as it grieves me to say it, France deserved the win, Zidane was fantastic. Classy, classy game. Restored some credibility to an increasingly dirty tournament.
Portugal are going to get the tommy tit kicked out of them come the semi!
After that I'm cheering for the Krauts. Two reasons not to: that little spat between us 60 years back, and dull football. First reason aside, they've played a magnificent attacking game throughout. Go on Klinsmann's lads!

that was by far the best that england have played yet in the tourney - but they went out to a side that, from what i saw (most of the first half and the first 10 minutes of the 2nd), were more than happy to cheat their way to the semis.
and it didnt hurt for them to have the 12th player on the pitch - i mean, come on - rooney gets kiscked in the head right in front of the linesman, he flags - the ref does nothing. blatant handball right in front of the linesman - ref ignores the waved flags.
i mean - what the smeg??didnt see the rooney sending off, so cant comment, but apparently he was physically assaulted and reacted.
still, one good thing - we've finally got rid of that smirking swede...

He was initially fouled, but then stamped on Carvalho's bollocks right in front of the ref and proceded to shove Ronaldo when the weasle badmouthed his ManU "friend" to the most impartial Argie. Don't get me wrong, Ronaldo is a snake of the first order, but Rooney was a hot-headed fool.

To be fair to Shrek, isolating him up the front was an accident waiting to happen. I said at half-time he was going to kick off before long. You can blame individual players for some of it -- Gerrard and Lampard were way off target, and Beckham was woeful this match -- but the buck still stops at that Swedish clot in the dugout. Best England team in years. Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
The penalties were a disgrace. But not as much as a disgrace as Ronaldo, cheating effing ****! Did anyone see him winding Rooney up at the beginning, the little head butt and the wink he gave the team after the sending off? Disgraceful player!
I don't want anyone but Beckham to be our captain, he is a great player and leader.
I'd like the Italians to win.
