Windows Vista - Are you going to switch?

If you haven't been living under a rock for the last couple of months you'll probably have heard something about Windows Vista. And from today it is available! (for everyone although business clients have been able to play with Vista for a while now).

All major PC brands will be pushing you to upgrade to Vista or at least buy it with your new computer. Some of you that have already bought a computer recently might have even received a coupon for a free upgrade to vista (if you bought a new PC for the X-mas period even if you haven't got a coupon you should be able to upgrade for (almost) free directly via Microsoft).

So what do you think? Are you going to stick with what you got or will you be upgrading to Vista in the near future? I know Maff just bought a new laptop with Vista and I'm pretty sure that Noid won't be switching to Vista any time soon, but what about the rest of you?

while im not particularly fond of MS software, im planning on replacing XP MCE2005 on this box with vista home pro in a couple of months.
partly because im going to need it for my sideline of repairing other peoples computers, but mostly because im a geek and i want to play with the pretty.
its not going to replace any of my linux boxen, or my mac any time soon, though

I'll stick with the operating system I have--XP. The only way I'd be get getting Vista is if I buy a new computer at some point and it comes with Vista. For my purposes--which are pretty basic--what I have is fine. I'll keep my money in my pocket for now.

I won't be switching for a little while until I get a new computer. Mainly because my current graphics card won't run aero (yes it is that old) so there isn't really much point for me. But somewhere in March I will be getting a new one (as otherwise I won't be able to play C&C Tiberium Wars) which will certainly be loaded with Vista.

Also means I'll get the experience in when people start to ask me question on it

I'm getting Vista on a new laptop, hopefully in the next week or two.

I've needed a new laptop for a few months, and figured i may as well wait and get Vista pre-installed. Companies started selling Vista systems this weekend, so I ordered that new laptop, from Dell. Managed to get a good spec for a good price, so i'll be mobile once again when it arrives.

Vinnie Just because you don't beleive in something, doesn't mean it's not true.

Wel servie Pack 1 is just going into beta ready for a release 2nd half of this year. So I wouldn't even bother until then.

Well Bunny, you're right, I'm not going to downgrade any of my Linux machines to Vista

And since I only have Linux machines, I'll stay Vista-free

JtB If someone gives you freedom it is not freedom, freedom is something you take for yourself.

Im looking at a new computer soon so will wait, mind you by then there will be a lots of critical updates to be downloaded makes me glad I have Broadband.

guffer Everybody is dead, Dave

Have run it up at work (we are on open subscription so got it in december). I don't like it. It needs way too much CPU power and RAM to achieve nothing. I will have to run it so that I can fix it when it breaks to help others, but it is so resource hungry. I have converted some of my own kit to Linux and think I will continue to do so. If I have to run windoze for the few apps that I can't use wine for, it'll be xp, which I dont overly like either.

Wobag Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so...

Ive not personally used a 'new' Windows till after the first service pack, and that will be the case this time. However I guess if I needed a new computer before then Id use it if it came with it.

Ive also never bothered to change an OS on a computer while Ive had it, its always been adoption with new hardware.

My laptop can't handle Vista really and my desktop runs Linux so I won't be running Vista at home any time soon. Not sure when I'll upgrade the computers at work, certainly not before SP1 is released.

I'll switch to Vista if a piece of softwear I need won't run without it. Until then, Mr Gates' little holding will have to struggle on without my further custom.

I've had my new laptop, with Vista pre-installed, for about a week now, and I really like Vista.

It's fast, responsive, pretty and everything works. It's totally stable and I've had no real problems with it. Well worth giving it a try, me finks.

I bought my laptop about a month to early to get a free Vista upgrade. I think I'll stick with XP for the moment.

Stoo There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.

I've been running it since it came available on MSDN on my second box..

TBH I really can't see the point in moving to Vista from XP, the requirements to make it run properly are stupid, Aero is a pointless distraction, and they've hidden even more stuff away behind my-first-computard "wizards"..

The only thing worth getting it for is when your games require DX10, which helpfully isn't being released for XP as a way to get everyone to "upgrade" (and sell more hardware to run the darned thing).

Hopefully the campaign to get more mainstream apps ported to Linux will bear fruit (mostly the Adobe stuff), then I'll switch and ditch windows forever.

I have tried both of those and although they do the majority of the things flashfxp can do (which is great) I'm using a lot of external (custom) scripts to make my life a lot easier to do most of my common tasks. Moving to another client would mean having to rewrite all those scripts from the ground up.

im sure there are user-created plugins/extensions available which would do most of the things you require.
this IS open source, after all...
