New Doctors only come along every once in a while, and its usually a met with a mix of excitement, and concern. What if the new guy isnt any good? Worse, what if I think he's great, but noone else does?

Fortunately, neither of these things appears to be an issue with Matt Smith who's full debut on Saturday appears to have won over the masses, and to a large extent, me. While being guilty of the fundamental sin of being younger than I am, Smith seems to be able to bounce from the gangly offbeat, to the convincingly powerful (basically... run).

Of course Smith wasnt the only change to the series, perhaps more importantly was Stephen Moffat's arrival as showrunner. Steven's gift for classic lines was definitely in evidence here (you're Scottish, fry something). The tone of the episode was very much not a reboot or diversion from the RTD era, yet somehow imperceptibly different, and perhaps we will only be able to define how as the series progresses.

Third on the list of debuts is of course Karen Gillan as Amy Pond. Of course being drop dead cute as a button gorgeous helps, but Amy is instantly likeable, in a plucky-yet-not-annoyingly-pushy way, and is racing to the top of my list of favourite companions based on just a few minutes of screen time.

The plot itself was very lightweight fare, acknowledging the job of the episode to really focus on its new cast, and perhaps the episode would have benefitted from being a bit tighter, losing pace at points where the villainous Prisoner Zero repeatedly stood around looking villainous, rather than actually doing anything... Seeds were intruiginly sown for the rest of the season, and new viewers eased into the format.

Of slight concern were some patchier than expected effects (perhaps due the budget cuts the show has faced and jumping to HD), and a less than inspiring rework of the theme tune. A new title sequence can be added to the list of the otherwise trivial things Who fans like me pick over to an annoying extent.

Fortunately a glorious new Tardis interior set, which bodes well for exploring more of the time machine than the recent series have allowed ended the episode on a up note.

Heres looking forward to 12 more episodes hopefully as least as much fun as this one.
