i think we have a duty to our country to make it a good place. i also believe i have a duty as a man to respect all women and admire then for being so strong and kind especially my mum

Duty
Is duty an old-fashioned concept?
If not, what do you consider your duties, and towards whom?

My duty is to be first a good wife and mother!
I have old fashioned values so I believe that my duty is to my family no matter what

"Duty" is what they used to call "values" or "priorities," I think. The only difference I might see is that "duty" sounds like something society or tradition might dictate that a person cares about, whereas the person herself determines her "values" or "priorities." (I'm quite unconcerned with the precise definition, as I'm sure someone will pull the official definition from somewhere. )
Now, I think, the word "duty" has gotten a bad rap since it sounds fussy and old-fashioned, and connotes something that no one wants to do. But it still exists in some form, because people still see that they have responsibilities outside themselves. And I have enough faith in human nature to say that they always will see that.

Given the political philosophy espoused by many here it may be rather unpopular to say this, but I have a deep seated belief in "noblesse oblige". Ich dien, etc.
But then again I'm a card carrying member of the forces of darkness...

1 - An act or a course of action that is required of one by position, social custom, law, or religion.
2 - a) Moral obligation: acting out of duty.
b) The compulsion felt to meet such obligation.

For me, I find no value in the first. All are redundant accept the law, and I have no sense of duty for the law, only to the social contract that is behind it, which the law frequently misuses.
The second I do feel. I feel a duty to look out for my friends; to be there when they need me. The same goes for my family. I feel a sense of duty to stand up for what I believe is right or wrong. I just don't feel any duty to queen or country, or any of that malarkey.

I believe that everyone has a duty to live in good faith.
The closest I can come to easily explaining that is the duty to act in an ethically consistent manner and to empathise with other people such that you treat them in the same manner as you would like to be treated in return.

I aim to be a good mother to my children and a good wife and friend to my husband... i too don't think of it as a duty.

i feeel like i should be loyal to friends, respect others and be well mannered.
Don't know if they're duties, they are just things i've been brought up to believe i should do.

I would tend to agree, I think in military situations the army for example still have duties to ones country.

An individual would see themselves with priorities - the number one of those tending to be children as they need nursing and caring through their years. As I don't personally have children I don't feel as I have any priorities to others as I believe my husband is quite capable of looking after himself. We are however, respectable and honest with each other which I suppose comes down to values
