Don't do it CK! If you're gonna buy anything musical and brass like then make it a SAX! On the cool chart of musical instruments they rank No. 1, whereas a trumpet wouldn't make it in the top ten.

I hav to agree with Rally. The sax is definitely the coolest of the brass instruments. It's the one I'd go for.

Argh! Well what sorta prices are Sax's? Because I just want to play brass as it's just something I like to listen to it

But surely the coolest instrument is the clarinet. You can play some real sexy tunes on that. Like 'Snug as a Bug in a Rug'. I made love to that song during the 1418 war...

I'd go for Sax too but i'm biased. I started playing it after playing the clarient and really enjoyed it because it was much more fun.

The only thing i'd say is that check if you feel you could handle the weight on your neck. I know your quite petite and after about 30mins my neck starts to really hurt.

Maybe your school might have one you can maybe take home to see how you like it

Although, I will admit that the trumpet bits in Nofx songs are generally pretty good.

/me makes a brief, but long overdue, return to T21 (the reasons for my absence are many, varied and will be explained when I return properly) as this is a subject he has long been associated with.

I may be in retirement, but I played for 24 years and suffered the obvious ridule of being a trombonist (until I mention the fact that I've visited countries I wouldn't have otherwise considered, played in the company of royalty, on TV, radio, played once in front of an audience of 64,000 people and contributed towards 3 albums - one of which had sod all to do with Brass Bands) and didn't regret a minute of it.

Kat, if you want to know the details of some reputable brass shops drop me a line. While there are no decent ones (to my knowledge) in Essex, I know 3 very good ones. One in Hitchin, one in Beaconsfield and another in the Maidenhead area.

Woodwind is more popular in schools because the instruments are cheaper on the whole - my current Trombone is about 2 grand - and easier to learn (i.e. get to a standard where it doesn't sound too awful!). Brass takes a little bit more application and can sound pretty dire for quite some time unless you are prepared to "get your lip in shape!".

My parents (and neigbours at the time) must have been saints to put up with two brass playing offspring. Then when I stopped, my current neighbour told me that he missed hearing me practice. Believe me, I don't miss having to practice!

Brass is an aquired taste, and I wouldn't consider the theme to Ground Force to be a particularly good example (though it is played by arguably the best brass band in the world), but there is probably no more powerful, raw, unamplified, sound than that of a brass band at full tilt.

The film Brassed Off is about as close as it gets to real brass music, with the exception of the fact that no one in their right minds would play the William Tell Overture at the National Finals - and win!

I'm glad someone pointed that out. I was gonna, but I wasn't sure. Yeh, there are some great brass tunes out there, I have some cracking trip hop with some gorgeous trumpet in it.

Well, it's reed based, which is why it aint brass, but that's as far as my knowledge takes me.

Is reed a class? I guess not, so prolly woodwind then.
