Eurovision gets a taste of the dark side...

The Eurovision Song Contest. Not everyone's cup of tea. In fact there are probably a lot of people out there who would say that it has no place being mentioned in a Music forum...

It's one of those things you either love or hate. Personally, I love it! It's cheese-tastic!!

But the big news this week was the announcement of the Finnish entry for this years competition. Apparently they were sick of doing so badly for so many years, so they've decided to go for a slight change of style. No more twee outfits, synchronised dancing and deep and meaningful lyrics along the lines of "Boom-bang-a-bang".

Enter Lordi!

(No your eyes aren't deceiving you, and yes they really are a band!)

Yep, the Finnish monster-metallers Lordi are going to be performing on behalf of their country at this years Eurovision song contest with the song "Hard Rock Hallelujah"! Don't let appearances fool you though, while there's no denying that they are a metal band, their sound isn't quite as heavy as the image might suggest. They definitely have more in common with Kiss than with Cradle of Filth!

This has caused a fair bit of outrage amongst people in Finland and in Greece (where this year's contest is being held), with people branding them Satanists and claiming that it'll warp the fragile little minds of all the innocent viewers! Lordi have responded by saying that they are not Satanists, in fact they have a song called "The Devil is a Loser"!

So what are people's opinions? Are any Eurovision fans outraged by it? Any non-Eurovision fans now considering watching?

Personally... I can't wait!!!

ok, so it might be cheese - which as far as im concerned doesnt make it worth watching - but youve also got to remember some of the horrors that have been inflicted on the world by eurovision.
f'rinstance, sealion dying, sorry, celine dion got her big break on this, singing for switzerland several years back (before she sank the titanic with her god-awful singing).
or just about every norwegian entry ever **shudder**.
i used to be made to sit through this every year by my parents - think i should sue them for emotional distress, or something.
about the only good thing about it - it sent itself up so well that there was never any need for anyone else to ever have to bother...

Ferretgirl Make something idiot-proof and they will make a better idiot

i love the Eurovision Song Contest. Although in recent years with most (bar the french) singing in English making it less entertaining cos you can't put subtitles on and see what they're REALLY saying!

However, i shall still be sat watching it with a few others in my room on that saturday night bitching about entries. I heard that our tune was some sorta dance song which i'm not really looking forward to but hey ho!

Personally I can take it or leave it. If it's on and I'm about then I'll more than likely take the time to watch a bit of it, but only so I can laugh at how dire some of the entries are, lol!!

However, I think its a great idea to bring 'new life' into the contest by straying from the mainstream 'culture pop'! Afterall I'm sure even the smallest of countries has a new Ozzy waiting to be unleashed into the world...

I heard that our tune was some sorta dance song which i'm not really looking forward to but hey ho!

It's not really a dance tune, we've actually got some white rapper called Daz Sampson singing about "Teenage Life" (complete with a choir of chavs for the chorus)! When I first heard it I was almost cringing at how bad it is, but now I really like how bad it is!

It's a simple, catchy, throwaway tune, which for a Eurovision entry sounds about right to me.

How cool is the Lordi video?! Rock chicks, zombie cheerleaders and scary finnish rockers in monster make-up! What more do you need?

Gah!!! I had to turn off the vidoe for our entry it was *that* cringworthy

Certainly is no Katrina and the Waves

Had a little look through the rest of the entrants. Was glad to see that Sweden as a good catchy-boppy tune which i found myself bobbing along to

Was disappointed by Norway's entry, they're usually pretty happy-go-lucky, but not this year, and the Finish one just made me laugh! It's so un-Eurovision it's cool

As for the whole Eurovision melarky, I don't love it, but at the same time, I don't hate it. I'll watch it when it's on, but won't make a special arrangement to do so. I remember how ever long ago it was that it used to be edging up towards being quite good. Now it's just trashy. I can't believe that the best the UK can find to put forward for this is that Dan whatshisface! I mean, come on. There's more talent that the here (not that what he possesses can be mistaken for talent

).

I'll watch it for comedy value, but that's it

Hahaha! Another slightly amusing thing I just realised is that Spain's entry is none other than Las Ketchup! And although they're not singing the Ketchup Song (or whatever it was called), it doesn't sound a million miles away from it...

Eurovision is this Saturday folks, so set your musical tastebuds to maximum cheese!

Oh, and the semi-final is on Thursday night for those obsessive enough to watch that too. I'll be watching it just in case Finland don't make it through to the final (i.e. if there really is no justice in the world).

And the exciting news from last night's Eurovision semi-final is that Finland made it through! Woo-hoo!!

So we can all look forward to hearing Terry Wogan's reactions to them tomorrow night! Personally, I can't wait!
