Adam raised his head from his book and looked around the classroom. It was deathly silent, and it wasnÂ’t because they were sitting an exam. The only time the class were silent except during exams was when someone died. At Sunnydale High, that was all too common.
The class were currently reading Macbeth which, when you took away all the stuffy and overwritten language, was actually a pretty good play in AdamÂ’s opinion. Unfortunately, most people didnÂ’t care what AdamÂ’s opinion was. That was fine by Adam most of the time but there was one person in the class that he wished cared about what he thought. Melissa. Melissa was a girl that, while not the most popular, or the most attractive in the class, Adam deemed to be out of his league. She was tall for a girl, but not too tall. Slim, but not skinny. Her hair was dark and long, worn simply by a girl that did not need frills and makeup to be attractive. Looking across the room the room at her, Adam blushed when he realised Melissa and her friend had caught him looking at her. He buried his head back in his book.
When the class was finished, Adam took his time leaving. He wanted everyone else to have left when he went so that he could avoid Melissa. He dropped one of his books on the floor on purpose to slow him down, but when he went to pick it up, Melissa was just bending down to pick it up herself. Adam averted his eyes from her cleavage as he stood up, not wanting to be caught looking down her top.
“You should be more careful with your books, they’re expensive,” she said, handing the book back.
“Er, yeah, thanks,” was all Adam could get to come out of his mouth in reply.
“So why did you knock it on the floor? You aren’t avoiding me are you? I saw you looking at me earlier,” said Melissa, smiling.
“To be honest? Yes…I figured I could avoid exactly this conversation if I stayed in the classroom until everyone else had left,” replied Adam, stuffing the book into his bag. He could feel the heat rising to his cheeks, burning them red.
“And why would you do that? Aren’t you going to ask me out?”
“I uh, I mean I, I had thought about it, but…” Adam trailed off, looking at the floor.
“I’m really not very good at this, I haven’t exactly had a lot of practice,” he continued.
“Well, here’s your chance! Do you want me to write a script for you?” she said, through a growing grin.
“Okay… Melissa, would you like to uh, go out with me sometime? To the movies or something?”
“Sure, I’d love to! Say Friday at 7pm?”
“Er, sure, Friday at 7pm would be great,” he muttered, wondering if this was really happening. He pinched himself after she had gone to make sure it
was
real and regretted pinching himself afterwards.
The next couple of days were the most nerve wracking days of Adam’s seventeen years of life. He went and got his hair cut, showered three times a day, bought some new clothes. Then his Mum realised why he was acting strangely and bought him a new bottle of aftershave, commenting on how her ‘little boy’ had grown up so fast. By Friday night, Adam was ready lock himself in his room and not come out, he was so nervous. Standing in front of the mirror in his bedroom he told himself to calm down while he made sure he looked okay. His hair was gelled and brushed, although not too much gel. He had used too much gel one day at school and the comments about his
nancy
boy hair gel hadnÂ’t stopped for days. He had shaved all except his sideburns, which he liked, no matter what anybody else said, although he thought if Melissa didnÂ’t like them he might be tempted to shave them off, even though heÂ’d always sworn heÂ’d never change for a girl. He wore a fitted tank top which showed off his big arms and chest, the positive result of hours in the gym every week. If he was more assertive, it would be him that was out of MelissaÂ’s league. He finished off with some baggy fit jeans.
Smart but casual
, he thought to himself.
When he got there in the car, Melissa was stood at the door waiting. She had her hair tied up, which Adam had never seen, and she was wearing a low cut top that showed off just enough cleavage so as to be attractive but not slutty. AdamÂ’s face must have given away what he was thinking when she came out to meet him, because she gave him a knowing smile.
“You look
great
,” he said sincerely.
“Thanks!” was the reply as they both got into the car and drove off.
What Adam didnÂ’t see was MelissaÂ’s father stood in the doorway after they had gone.
She better get back before the moon comes outÂ…
he thought to himself before he shut the door and went down to the basement.
When Adam and Melissa arrived at the cinema, neither of them could decide what they wanted to see, or even who should decide which film they should see. Adam wanted Melissa to decide, Melissa wanted Adam to decide. Adam wanted to see the latest Werewolf film, English Werewolf in New York.
“Nah, those films are always way too unrealistic,” Melissa had said, producing a puzzled look on Adam’s face. In the end, they went to see some film about aliens invading Earth, which as Adam said was
so
realistic, in his most sarcastic voice.
After the film, they went to get something to eat, stopping at a café and ordering apple pie and hot coffee.
“Like good Americans should”, Melissa said.
They talked for a long time, laughing and poking fun at each other. Adam wondered where all his nerves had gone, but he found when he sat and talked properly with Melissa he was completely at ease. There was one moment when he went bright red, but that was because Melissa made fun of him because he was looking down her top when she knelt down to tie her shoe laces.
Then things took what Adam would remember as a turn for the worse. Melissa was looking out of the window at the sky when she told Adam she was feeling ill. He asked if she was okay and she said sheÂ’d just go to the bathroom and freshen up, then they should go. When she walked away, Adam was sure he heard her growl.
As he sat drinking his coffee, which by now was getting cold, Adam looked over to the door. Walking into the café came a tall man with bleach blond hair, wearing a long leather trench coat with a red shirt and black t-shirt underneath. When he came in, all the heads in the café turned to look at him, but one by one they all turned back to each other, discussing their bank accounts, or their wives or the latest CD they’d bought. But suddenly all the heads were brought back to the attention of that same man when a scream came from where he had been sat. When Adam turned to look, he was horrified at what he saw. The man’s face had changed, and he was biting the woman’s neck, sucking her blood.
It canÂ’t be
he thought.
They donÂ’t exist
.
Then, throwing the woman to the floor, the vampire, as Adam had to admit he must be, addressed the occupants of the café.
“This, my happy meal friends, is a stick up! Well actually, it’s more of a one vampire feast, but I always did want to have a good old fashioned stick up, just like in Pulp Fiction,” shouted the vampire as people sat scared out of their wits. Moving through the café, the vampire gathered everybody’s wallets, eating the people he thought looked tasty, killing the ones he thought looked nasty and letting the occasional person live.
Adam was wondering where Melissa was when the vampire came to his table. Adam didnÂ’t want Melissa coming out of the bathroom now, he was sure the vampire would find her very tasty and the thought terrified him more than anything else.
“You here with anyone else, little gym boy?” said the vampire with a sneer, stuffing Adam’s wallet into his pocket.
“N-n-no, I’m alone,” replied Adam, shaking his head while his hands trembled on the table.
“Little gym boy is telling porkies, isn’t he? You have two plates here, and two lots of cutlery,”
“I did have a friend here, she left earlier, she was ill,”
“Little gym boy is still lying! No matter, I’ll eat him and then find his whore,” shouted the vampire to the café, grabbing Adam by the throat and lifting him off out of the seat.
Just as the vampire grabbed Adam a great roar came from the other side of the café.
“What you forget, blood sucker, is that in Pulp Fiction, the thieves get their asses kicked”, came a female voice, the a growl in it.
“A werewolf! In Sunnydale! I bloody well should have known I’d see one eventually,” said the vampire, dropping Adam to the floor.
Clutching at his throat, Adam looked over at the new addition to the scenario. It was indeed a werewolf, but it didnÂ’t look like a complete animal. It was hairy, had big claws and big teeth, but it looked likeÂ…
“Melissa?” Adam let out between deep breaths.
“What did you say gym boy? Is this mutt you’re whore? Into bestiality are you? Well, I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to put your dog to sleep!”
With that, the vampire jumped across the room and launched a booted foot into the werewolfÂ’s, MelissaÂ’s, mouth. Letting out a fierce growl Melissa fought back, swinging a clawed paw at the vampire. It caught him in the chest, tearing a big piece out of the creatureÂ’s t-shirt.
“Hey! That t-shirt was new, you overgrown poodle!”
Spinning round, the vampire kicked Melissa again, then again and again. Blood flew from MelissaÂ’s mouth until she actually caught the vampireÂ’s foot in her mouth. Gripping down on it with an iron bite, she started to shake her head violently, trying to rip the vampireÂ’s foot off. Grabbing hold of a chair, the vampire swung at Melissa several times, breaking her grip. Turning and seeing Adam, the vampire sought a new strategy. Running over to Adam, the vampire picked him up and threw him at Melissa. In such an animalistic state, Melissa clawed at Adam until his cries of pain broke through the animal and the real Melissa took hold of the body. Falling to the floor Melissa suddenly changed and Adam saw that she was the girl heÂ’d taken out on a date again. She was bleeding from the mouth, but nothing like the bleeding Adam was doing from the huge claw marks across his body. Crawling over to him, Melissa tried to help him, but he rolled away, confused and frightened.
“Cute couple”, was the last thing the vampire said as it left the café.
I hate werewolves
, he thought.
The next time Adam woke up, he was in a hospital and Melissa was stood next to his bed. She was smiling at him, but instinctively he backed away and her smile dropped from her face, replaced by a look of sadness.
“I’m leaving Sunnydale today, Adam”, she said, obviously upset.
“My Dad says we can’t stay in Sunnydale now that someone knows what we are, even thought we aren’t full wer…well, you know,”
“Melissa, I…”
“Don’t Adam. I know I frighten you, and that won’t ever change. My changes are unpredictable and I could kill you next time. I have to leave, for your safety as much as mine,”
Adam turned his head to look out of the window. It was night time and the moon was out. Not quite full, but not far off it. When he turned back to look at Melissa, she wasnÂ’t there.
Bye Melissa
, he said to himself as he rolled over and buried his head in his pillow.
