My vote went to Ridley Scott. Will films like Alien, Blade Runner under his belt, both of which i love, he's a great genre direcor. I only wish he'd do more genre stuff.

My second choice would have been Tim Burton, who has done a lot more good genre stuff than Scott, but i just love Blade Runner, and Ridley Scott rules

I went for Tim Burton. He's made quite a few very cool genre movies and is probably the most consistently good one off the list.

Ridley Scott only has two good films. James Cameron has four though one of them isn't a sci-fi/genre movie. Terry Gilliam is very cool, but he's not the best by a long shot. Steven Spielberg, although I initially discounted him without question, has actually made a lot of very, very cool genre movies, and as such he's probably a close second on my list.

Tim Burton got mine as soon as i saw the question. i love his style. NBC is my TB favorite. oh but the first i ever saw was Frankenweenie which sparked off my love for ugly dogs.

Ridley Scott for pretty much the same reasons as Maff.

While Tim Burton has made more genre films with a very distinctive style, I feel Blade Runner and Alien are much classier films. Very atmospheric.

Quality over quantity in this instance

Brazil, Time Bandits, Jabberwocky, Twelve Monkeys (OMG - TWELVE MONKEYS, fer crying out loud!), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and I haven't even mentioned Python! Ok, I have now...

Fisher King is his weakest film. Compare that against GI Jane (Scott), AI / Jurassic Park / Lost World (Spielberg), Titanic (Cameron - I was tempted to add T2) and Batman Returns / Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (Burton).

Scott has made some questionable, Blockbuster-type films. Spielberg makes a lot of sentimental tosh and should be hung by his privies. Cameron doesn't make much, and his films aren't exactly .. emotionally engaging. Burton makes visually stunning films but (with the exception of Edward Scissorhands) he usually passes on character or plot development - Batman Returns is a perfect example of this.

Whereas Gilliam is god. Vote for god.

Oh, on Ridley, although I realise this doesn't help my 'Why aren't you voting for Gilliam!?!' case. People have suggested he's only made two good / genre films: Alien and Blade Runner. No one else share my love of Legend then?

Yes it is, Burton is chronically indecisive throughout. Batman Returns is packed with wonderfully bizzare characters, but there's so many the plot threads are wound hopelessly thin, and the story ends up so diffuse it falls apart. Catwoman was easily the star of the show, but we hardly see her: the script sorely needed some ruthless editing.

But Ed Wood is such a glorious, heartwarming celebration of flawed creativity it instantly wins Burton my vote. I'm honestly unable to think of another director who could make that film without turning it into a superficial mickey take.

Anyone who can humanise Bela Lugosi has a rare tallent indeed!

huh...missed the Genre thing and just saw Sci-Fi...

So Cameron got my vote for Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss & T2 & more power to him for steering clear of the steaming heap that was T3

Second choice would be Scott for Bladerunner & Alien

Third would be Gilliam. I liked the Time Bandits, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen & Twelve Monkeys
