Considering he knows the material (he is writing an X-Men comic after all...) and assuming Serenity does pretty well, i could see Joss doing an excellent job of an X-Men film.
However, i suspect Fox may want to move ahead with the film sooner than Joss Whedon could, which is precisely the reason Singer can't do it, because Fox won't wait for him.

Dude....have you seen any of Joss's directing, he's totally awesome and I'm not the only one who thinks it.....I believe he recently topped a poll as the most wanted person to direct X3.....

so he probably won't do it anyway, I'd rather there be the chance for a firefly trilogy anyway

To be honest i'm not bothered who directs as long as it happens and its good.
With respect, the only director who has and could do any justice to the X Men franchise is Bryan Singer. I hope he does the Superman movie justice (whenever they get around to casting Superman himself, the hot rumour is Tom Welling)but i hope he finds time to do X3 too... personally i don't think Hugh Jackman for example would reprise Wolverine without Bryan Singer
With respect, i think that's rubbish

Singer is the only one who *has* done justice to the franchise, because he's the only one who has been given the chance. There are a myriad of directors that could do as good or a better job than Singer did.
Can you imagine an X-Men film directed by James Cameron? or even Michael Bay? Would be a great action film. A director like Michael Mann or Ridley Scott could do an amazing X-Men film, or someone like Guillermo Del Toro could do a fantastic off-beat one.
The rumour about Tom Welling has been fairly convincingly debunked from what i've read. The latest on most news sites is that casting calls are going out over the USA and Canada for everyone, unknowns and all.

As for Hugh Jackman, i think if they pay him enough and he thinks it will work for his career, he'll do it.
Well Maff, you have your opinion and i have mine
The latest news that i have heard is that Tom has been offered the role by Singer. Tom is taking time to think it over and to decide whether to accept or not. This is from the Superman V.com website which i've been lead to believe by other Superman fans to be a very respected website (though having not checked it out personally, i can't say for sure). For Tom to be able to do Superman, would mean the end of Smallville at the end of S4. Plus there's all the things such as typecasting etc. And there have been wrangles with the WB that are too long, complicated and frankly boring to get into here. A decision/announcement whatever is expected sometime this month. I've also seen the call go out for the auditions and maybe this is a way for the PTB to cover their asses incase Tom declines the role, i don't know.
I'm only responding with what i've read and digested on other sites discussing this subject. All the internet polls seem to want Tom to play the role. A couple of years ago i might have said he wouldn't have the acting experience to pull it off, but watching him through the third season of Smallville, with the right director, he might just have what it takes. I'd like to see him attempt it.
The only other serious.contender i've heard about for the role of Superman is Jim Caviezel.

Just thought i'd post This link.
It's the article about Superman on Dark Horizons, which is one of the best and most well respected news sites on the net. Not saying the site you referred to is wrong, but Dark Horizons reported the same thing, and then the above article debunks that.
I've not seen Jim Cavaziel in anything, but i unequivacly think an unknown actor should take the role. It's too high a profile role to stick some star in it. All stars, no matter how good, become type-cast, and i think to get a convincing Superman we need a fresh, original face. There's no reason why an unknown can't give just as good a performance as a well known actor.

Bryan took a couple of films to get it right, there are a few good directors out there who could probably do it justice but we cant waste a sequel while they try to get it right! Having said that, James Cameron and an unlimited budget would be super.
On the casting side I think Jim Caviziel wouold be excellent, as much as I enjoy Smallville I want to see an older Superman, and I dont think Tom has the kind of rgavity the role needs yet.

This is a good point. As the new film is going to be a continuation of the Reeve Superman franchise and not a new origin story, i think Welling could well be too young for the role. Although, i wouldn't put it past WB putting a young actor in the role for the sake of hipness.

Again Maff, it depends which source you read and believe in. After i posted what i did, i read about that article on Dark Horizons. Most of my information for want of a better word is from the Kryptonsite (the Movie section of the Message Board if you're curious enough ) and a couple of the posters there, who seem to know what they're talking about say that Dark Horizons is not very reputable at all, as i said, it's all about which source you read and which you believe. So my information may not be rubbish after all.. there are a couple of posters in there who are saying Tom has been offered the role who have come up trumps with info regarding the show in the past. I just don't know. All this waiting and speculating is killing me.
And the casting call is going out for a young male in his late twenties....Tom Welling is 27. While i don't know how old Jim Caviezel is, Hugh Jackman is 35. Christopher Reeve was younger than Tom when he took on the role as Superman.
