Well It's not long now, just a couple of months, so how's everyone looking forward to what promises to be the best star wars film since Return of the Jedi
As far as I can make out, there seem to be two levels of canon in Star Wars. The movies, and the "Expanded Universe" which consists of every licensed thing published (possibly even including the original (somewhat silly) Marvel comics. The encyclopedias, novels, Fact Files, comics and games all cross-refer back and forth across this expanded universe... How they stop it contradicting I don't know!

As far as I know, the films are canon and anything else is subject to change at Lucas' whim.
Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i think that the film that was released first (commonly called "Star Wars" actually called "A new hope" ) was always refered to as edisode IV, even in the first release. This also means that it was always planned to release 3 prequals, which not everyone realises.

I am looking forward to this being released, I can't wait to see how they link up the first 3 films with the start of the (what is now Epsidoe IV) first Star Wars that I watched

One question.. canon?
I meant Church of England officials...

Canon here means like "official" lore. If it happens in the movies then it's like "Star Wars Truth"
That pretty much jibes with my understanding. There's a fair amount of information on starwars.com about all this.

Okay the very first released version of Star Wars..the FIRST theatrical release was simply titled.. Star Wars. There was no mention of Episode IV or anything else as the film was not seen as a blockbuster by anyone. Lucas himself was having a meal around the corner from Mann's Chinese Theatre on Star Wars's opening day and was curious what everyone was queing to see....turned out to be his film. After the phenomanal success of Star Wars the opening credits were changed to Episode IV: A New Hope but not so that Lucas could film prequels but to put the film into it's proper timeline. You see when Lucas wrote the Star Wars plot the story was huge(He wrote basically from Episode 1 to Episode 9) and he realised that he would never be able to get the whole story into a 2 hour movie..so he picked the 4th part as it introduced characters and had the most rounded story which meant it could be used as a single film. When the film was successful 20th Century Fox immediatley wanted a sequel which Lucas already had a basic storyline for and only needed slight alterations to make into Empire Strikes Back(eg - The Wampa attack at the start of the movie was added to give a reason why Mark Hamill's face looked different..the result of a real-life car crash).
