Supernatural 1x01
Ive just had the opportunity to watch the first episode of the new WB series Supernatural.
From the description, I was expecting yet another retread of The X-files. However the finished product was much closer to the recent trend of spooky movies such as The Ring and Dark Water.
Another thing that distinguishes this show from the crop of X-Files clones is the wise choice not to have male and female pairing. Instead Supernatural focuses on two brothers in their 20s. I only recognised Jason Ackles from Smallville, but both actors are certainly likable in the roles, it remains to be seen whether the lack of a regular female character will impact on the audience the show can find.
The pilot is very atmospherically shot and would be hard to destinguish from a full film production. It appears that each week, a self cntained episode will focus on a different myth or urban legend, which does raise the concern that the show will soon run out of iconic material to draw on.
That said if you like this genre of films, it would be well worth checking out when it turns up on ITV who have recently bought the rights to it.
