Well we've no idea what her character will be like, so remain open minded. Of course its pretty indefensible to say she wont be good because shes not well known after the uproar over Billies casting and subsequent success.

The biggest risk for me is if they just try and do Rose MK 2 (for that matter I dont think you can have a black Chav can you?). Conversely if Martha is more socially upmarket, she risks alienating the common viewer (particularly the VERY common viewer )

Freema is 27, I suspect her character will be somewhat younger as they definitely want a character younger viewers can identify with, and 27 says property ladder and pension plan not partying and having fun.

Interestingly she doesnt start until season 3, which begs the question of what the Christmas Special will be, theories abound!

FYI depending on exactly who you count and who you dont, Martha will be round about companion number 35!

Well there needs to be a bit of a break between her appearing as the companion and having half her brain pulled out on screen so its good that she won't be appearing in the Christmas special.

She has amazing eyes and hopefully they can make her a companion with more depth who acts more as a foil to the Doctor than Rose did.

My biggest problem with Season 2 was Rose, she just didn't work with Tennant's Doctor so hopefully season 3 will be a lot better than 2

I really hope this one is a bit more mature than Rose....... Rose really is that part of Dr Who that has gotten on my nerves in season 2. Lets hope these two make a better mix.

But she was the companion between 1973 - 1976 those were different times. The word Chav wasn't even invented yet and neither was Reality Tv. So a completely different public, if you would put someone like her on now it would probably be a disaster (in certain demographics)

Ah, but she remained popular long after '76. (Although classic Doctor Who fans aren't known for their pikey contingent.) Can't see a less pikey sidekick making that much difference; Doctor Who wouldn't become a chav must-see even if they bunged Coleen McLoughlin in the Tardis. (Well, perhaps then ... for pity's sake don't let Russel T Davis read this.)

I could say that worrying about the unqualified chav audience is the end of cult TV as we know it, but a backlash must be on the way and we'll soon be seeing a hot young female doctor (of the medical type, not the enigmatic timelord type) sparring with Tennant. Well I'd like to think so.

I seriously think age perception has changed. Although perhaps that's because I wish I was 27 again! I don't see people in their late 20s automatically settling into humdrum lifestyles.

I'm not keen at the idea of having another female companion (although thank heavens it isn't Catherine Tate full time I would have struggled with that!) I still think they would have had more scope with a male companion with Marc Warren. He would have been perfect after the episode he guested in, along with the paving slab

I'm worried ... I heard on the radio earlier (but I wasn't really paying attention) that as there are supposed to be 13 generations of the Doctor, at some point they are considering making him a daddy

Well to be clear he has 12 regenerations, which makes for 13 bodies, so theoretically he has 2 left after this one.

However its often been implied that he is no ordinary time lord, so who knows what that could mean for him.

As for making him a father, they dont need to, he already is! Not only was this alluded to this season when he said "I was a father, once" (I forget the episode). But the show started with him travelling with a young female timelord, who referred to him as Grandfather.

Its never been clarified what their relationship is, but its generally thought it was more than a term of affection.

Probably so, but it was just another kid's TV show back in the Sixties, so I doubt Time Lord continuity was top of anyone's mind. Remember reading he was originally planned as a doddery old inventor; they kept that idea in the two big-screen versions with Peter Cushing.

(Incidentally, have you heard the very funny spoof Radio 4 "interview" with an adult Susan on the "Dalek Invasion of Earth" DVD? Turns out the good Doctor is in fact the temporal version of a used car salesman who's been illegally "trading in realities"!)
