High Definition comes to the masses
High Definition has been a buzz word for a few years now but has only really come into its own in the last couple of years. Xbox 360 and PS3 games are HD by default, internet video content is almost always available in a HD version, the HD DVD vs Blu Ray war has finally given us a winner (or rather, a loser and one that's left) and the result is HD discs that are only marginally more expensive than normal DVDs. In the UK, Sky's HD service has become affordable (finally) and Freeview will have HD channels from next year, though you'll need to upgrade to a HD compatible box.
That's the services side. On the hardware side, PCs will pretty much all play HD video now, so you can't go wrong there. Most people will watch HD on a TV though and they have come down in price rapidly in the last year or so. From bedroom sized portables up to huge living room and home theatre screens, prices have crashed. But they may not keep dropping at that rate. The credit crunch has truly taken effect and Sony have taken the drastic step of increasing their product prices in the UK. Truly bizarre.
Here in Oz we have HD channels on terrestrial, which is great but I only wish I had a tivo box so we could record. We do have Foxtel (aussie sky really), but it's not as good as sky and we don't get the terrestrial channels on it. Backwards much.
Anybody else taken or planning to take the HD plunge? Maybe as a Christmas present to yourself
