The Eleventh Doctor

After seemingly endless amounts (read about two months) of speculation about who was to take over the role of The Doctor from David Tennant, the actor was revealing in a special retrospective show tonight.

While popular opinion seemed to almost guarantee the roll to Patterson Joseph, the name Matthew Smith shot up the odds in the last couple of days, and for good reason, for Matt Smith it is.

Most controvercial is the actors age, at 26, easily being the youngest actor to play the part. The previous youngest was Peter Davison at 29 I believe, then current Doctor, Tennant.

He certaily looks to have a foppish weirdness to him, but it will take his debut performance in Spring 2010 to convince a lot of doubters. In the meantime, take comfort in the fact that he was chosen by Stephen Moffat, who hasnt put a foot wrong with his previous writing for the show.

Most importantly, this actor preserves the list of unique christian names, so fans can now comfortably refer to William, Patrick, Jon, Tom, Peter, Colin, Sylvester, Paul, Chris, David and Matt.

I would've preferred a slightly older choice, either Alan Davies, Anthony Head, Chiwetel Ejiofor or John Simm.

Still, I'm still willing to see if Smith can do the role justice.

Time will tell...

Keenangel *Fourteen phonecalls a night??!!*

I had a weird feeling it would be him while i watched the programme. I have nothing against the choice, i remember the hoo-ha over David Tennant's casting and personally i think he's been the best Doctor ever. I'll give the new one the benefit of the doubt but he's interesting, i'll say that.

I am totally gutted its not Patterson Joseph, he would have been fantastic. Personally I feel Matt is too young, but I could be proved wrong.

Sydney You can lead the whore to culture but you can't make her think!

I'm just fed up with all the 'Doctor Who is Dead' gumph on the interwebs since this was announced. People seem to forget that Peter Davidson was 29 when he got the role and that David Tennant had had fewer leading roles than Matt Smith has when he got the part.

I had to eat a massive piece of humble pie when the Catherine Tate episodes aired and i suspect that they'll need a fracking massive pie to go round in Spring 2010!

P.J.Triumph Born to drink Mild :)

I think it's a strange choice, but he must have been chosen for a reason. He'll be different, and may take some getting used to (I still have a mental image of Tom Baker when I hear "Dr Who" ), but I reckon he deserves a chance to put his own flavour to the character.
