I'll certainly be looking forward to that, despite Craig Charles now earning his crust in soaps.
Red Dwarf is back
Well, you already knew before you read this but I wanted to be the first to post it:

For me Red Dwarf was never the same in the last two series. There were still some great moments, but it was nowhere near as great as series 1-6. Having said that, I'm still gonna be looking forward to it.
It'll be interesting to see how they tie off what happened at the end of series 8, but I guess being Red Dwarf it'll be easy enough to come up with something.

I never really got into Red Dwarf myself, watch the odd episode but it always aired at times I didn't generally watched telly or there was something else on all together. Won't stop me watching it though.....
Actually, can I add that the first half of series 7 was pretty damn great! There were some fantastic episodes there. When Rimmer left though, thats when it went downhill.
The last 3 seasons were pretty poor IMO. There were a couple of good points but generally not good. Recycling Ace Rimmer & Duane Dibbley was particularly low. Also Chloe Annett was a right pain in the bottom.
Should they bring it back? Isn't Craig Charles most recently famous for being a crack head & Danny John Jules for assaulting bin men?
Oh, seem to remember one good later episode. The one where it turns out that the man who shot Kennedy was in fact Kennedy.

That episode was definitely one of the funniest - I was crying laughing at that.
"If you're in trouble he will save the day
He's brave and he's fearless come what may
Without him the mission would go astray
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer
Without him life would be much grimmer
He's handsome, trim, and no-one slimmer
He will never need a zimmer
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer
More reliable than a garden trimmer
He's never been mistaken for Yul Brynner
He's not bald, and his head doesn't glimmer
Master of the wit and the repartee
His command of space directives is uncanny
How come he's such a genius? Don't ask me!
Ask Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer
He's also a fantastic swimmer
And if you play your cards right
Then he just might come round for dinner
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer
No rhymes left now apart from quimmer
He'd better fade us out before we get to schlimmer
Fade out you stupid plimmer"
That's it - off to Youtube to see if it's on there

Although I was wondering how badly the cast being older was going to affect things, I was as enthusiastic as anyone else until I read this a few weeks ago:
After that, I really wasn't so convinced.
I was a devotee for the first six seasons, watched the seventh get worse and still haven't even seen all of season eight.
It wasn't just the removal of Rimmer - it was replacing him with Kochanski. For one thing, it blew the formula of basically a spacefaring version of The Young Ones open - and for another, I've met Chloe Annett and whilst she's a very nice lady, she just hasn't got the screen presence and the character type seemed off.
Clare Grogan's Kochanski at least came across as not just clever but ballsy enough to give Lister a run for his money - Annett's version was just neurotic and vapid.
And then season eight made it just another ensemble cast sitcom with a token woman and a sub-par script. Again, for me it worked best with that tight little unit playing off each other.

Let's not forget that the whole premise of Red Dwarf was that Lister was the last human alive and that Holly brought Rimmer back as a hologram to keep him sane because he (Rimmer) was the one person that annoyed Lister the most. Without Rimmer, it completely destroyed the dymanic of the show.

Well it was pants wasn't it?
I actually thought that the actors all looked great, but without a sharp script, it was a bit embarising. I didn't laught once.

I was away on a camping trip over the weekend, watched the first episode and half the second last night after I got home, and had a strange urge to go to bed at a sociable time for once.
Metafiction and breaking the fourth wall can very rarely work if you know what you're doing, but the last two seasons already proved that Doug Naylor doesn't.
If you're going to rip something off, the point of parody is that it's actually funny. The blatant Bladerunner nuances were neither big nor clever.
Dave Lister is not, never has been and never will be the lovestruck romantic lead. I know that people sometimes forget that there was a nine month jump in time during Ouroboros - which at least makes his transformation into an angsty Mrs. Kochanski a little more plausible than the overnight castration it looked like - but given what I already said in this thread about her character, it still felt like going far too far.
Naylor seems determined to turn the show into a comedy drama, and can't write either frightfully well. The cast did their best with a flat script that seemed about as blatant a merchandising pitch as an episode of He-Man, but even they seemed and sounded sheepish about being there at least half the time.

After the sheer length of time, I was sceptical even before the details got out. Actors age, writers change their sensibilities... Not every revival show can be Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?
Despite the blatant fishing for another season, I'm hearing far too many people say that this was so wide of the mark from the look, feel and spirit of the actual series they aren't even going to consider it canon.
Considering that, as I've already mentioned, the series ended with a Kochanski-shaped whimper and a few bright sparks (Tikka to Ride, Stoke Me a Clipper and certain scenes from Blue) with season seven, I'm inclined to agree.
